Leading Without Authority
How we can lead and create movement in a flat world
The world is flat, everything everywhere is within reach through the miracle of technology, and as happens whenever information becomes available old hierarchies are torn down, and the last remaining authorities are quickly falling. All being replaced by a growing array of tribes, collectives, and organic systems.
Gone are the days where titles turned ordinary human beings into super leaders. As a collective we have a foul taste left in our mouths left by the patriarchal, authoritarian structures and systems of the late 20th century. The question now is what does effective and inspiring leadership look like in the new world of work, with a gig economy world of remote workers, work swarms, and solopreneurs? |
|
Many organisations have already transitioned to a flatter structure and softer cultures. The challenge now is to figure out how to lead in this new flat world where the old methods and levers are near illegal.
In an ironic twist, it seems the answer to our question for what future leadership looks like might lie in our distant shared past. The answer might lie in the structures and value systems of monasteries, the conflict resolution processes of native American tribes, the ancient archetypes that form the basis of our perceptions, and the ideas about the universe from the first philosopher.

“Pierre du Plessis is most probably one of the best speakers I have encountered, anywhere in the world. I have been lucky enough to see the likes of Nir Eyal, Eric Qualman, the great Tony Dungy, even Bill Clinton, but do I do anything different after listening to them? Nope. I do after Pierre’s talks.”
Dewald du Plooy, Marketing Director KFC Africa
