ramblings.
Here is short audio clip from the Monday morning motivation I did on Radio 702 a few weeks back... It's supposed to read Create Good Work (not word), although good words would be good too. :)
Enjoy, and don't forget to share. Waves are just so persistent aren't they? Wave upon wave smashing against the rocks, day in and day out, seemingly not making any impact.
Glaciers move slowly, so slowly that you can't even notice it, you just hear the cracking of the ice, seemingly defeated by the rock. And yet, as we all know, even mountains have to kneel to the persistence of the ice, and boulders bow to the constant hammering of the waves. Persistence seems to be in short supply lately. It seems if you don't make it by 30 you've failed. Khing, the master carver, made a bell stand of precious wood. When it was finished, All who saw it were astounded. They said it must be the work of spirits.
The Prince of Lu said to the master carver, 'What is your secret?' Leading without 'authority'. The days of hierarchies and traditional leverage like salaries and vacation time are dead or dying.
The world of work has phenomenally shifted in the past decade. Today we have to deal with work swarms, solopreneurs, freelancers, remote workers, and millenials that quit to take a year sabbatical to find themselves in the outer reaches of Mongolia. 'Authority' as we remember it, or at least some of us, is a thing of the past. Today's workers want more than money, they need meaning, and crave community in place of colleagues. How to lead in such a world is the question. Leadership is necessary if you want to go somewhere and even with the rise of the robots you still need people to help you get there. The unfortunate truth is the usual levers just don't work anymore, and to be frank, they sucked to begin with. So what to do? As we turn the corner and hopefully on our way to summer, dreams of pina coladas and lazing on the beach starts dancing through our collective consciousness.
Yet, as almost anyone will tell you that after even just a few days of lazing around, most are itching to get back to work. Can I get an amen? One can only do so many daiquiris, and play so many boardgames in the beach house... For some reason we like to think that doing nothing with no responsilibilities is the ultimate human achievement. Retire before 40 and you win! |
