ramblings.
Waves are just so persistent aren't they? Wave upon wave smashing against the rocks, day in and day out, seemingly not making any impact. Glaciers move slowly, so slowly that you can't even notice it, you just hear the cracking of the ice, seemingly defeated by the rock. And yet, as we all know, even mountains have to kneel to the persistence of the ice, and boulders bow to the constant hammering of the waves. Persistence seems to be in short supply lately. It seems if you don't make it by 30 you've failed. When a contemporary painter bragged to Michelangelo that his fresco on another ceiling in Rome only took him one year to complete, the master replied, 'I can see that'.
How long does it take to break through a mountain, how long does it take to crack rock, to create a masterpiece? How long does it take to build the business you dream of, perfect your craft? It takes as long as it needs, which is always longer than we want. We just need to keep hitting the rock. And what it it doesn't break, what if you have been hitting the metal with your hammer for years and it just isn't giving way? If you should stop after years of trying, and I'm not the one to tell you when that is, you'll look and be perhaps surprised to see that from years of wielding the hammer your arms and calloused hands have become strong, strong enough for the next project.
