ramblings.
Bricoleur, someone that creates something with whatever they have at hand. Remember MacGyver? Well, that is a perfect example of a bricoleur. He gets trapped in a nuclear silo with nothing but toilet paper and two pieces of gum, and manages to escape using the tp, the gum, and his wit.
Violet Baudelair (in the pic above), is also a bricoleur. In the great film, Lemony Snickets, a Series of Unfortunate Events, she is described as 'the finest 14 year old inventor' and throughout the film she invents and creates gadgets and gizmos, that entertain and even save her family. In a world with seemingly unending possibilities and resources, we tend to get stuck, spoiled for choice or rather an illusion of choice. 'when we get the funding we will start' 'when we can purchase that tech, then...' and so we wait. Why not be a bricoleur (a word I learnt from my friend Tom Smith), what is around you, what is within arms reach and use that. The world will love you for it. |
