ramblings.
So it's my 20 year highschool reunion in three months time, and I really, really want a six pack, mostly to prove to myself that a 38 year dad doesn't need to look like santa, and I only train when I have a goal, however silly.
(Then I just need to figure out a way to take my shirt of at the reunion..., I'll post a pic if I make it. :) Our culture's idea of body beautiful has been a flat tummy for the last, i don't know, century? The ever elusive flat tummy, I'm sure many of you would agree a flat tummy is incredibly hard to achieve (after the age of 12), and even harder to keep. So we all do what I do, you suck it in. (Maybe it's time for corsets again?) Strange title for this week's blog on happiness. Why Sadness is good for you. In our culture being sad has almost become a sin, or shameful. We all have to be happy, all the time, like we're living in a GAP ad or something Sadness plays a very important part in your happiness. Yes, you read that right, sadness is important for your well being.* Emotions are just that, motions. All emotions are important, and good. They all have role to play. Emotions are there to move us (from there the MOTION part of e-motion), towards or away from what we need or don't need in our lives.
Here is another post on happiness, my first one, Happiness is a skill, receive a mad amount of views. Thanks for all the shares! Happiness for me is a daily struggle, as I mentioned in the previous post, I suffer from severe depression and have been using medication daily for the past 3 years, so me writing about happiness is beautifully ironic. So this is me trying to work out how to live, happily, in a world gone mad. I have learnt that much of happiness is a skill (a line I heard on a Tim Ferris podcast when he interviewed Naval Ravikant). Happiness is a continuous habit, something you can learn. Just this thought was enough to give me hope, happiness is not bestowed by the happiness fairy, it is something that I can learn. I like reading and learning, and if I can learn how to fight, do a triathlon or run an ultra-marathon I can learn this. So here is a trick I learnt on how to learn to be happier. What would Rialette do?
My wife is an insanely positive person. For he the whole damn cloud is ALWAYS silver. She can find the positive side to anything. Once her rear windshield of her car shattered during the night in the middle of what was a crazy cold winter. We discovered this obviously on the morning, she had to drive to work with a massive hole in the back of her car. I was, let’s say very, angry, annoyed, and frustrated. Rialette, on the other hand, was not. Halfway to school with the freezing wind blowing through the broken window, she called me. When I picked up, she was screaming and laughing at the other end. ‘I’ve got a convertible!!’ Now that is being positive. In a chaotic world, we still have choices. In fact, in a chaotic world you may have even more choices than in a stable one. In a chaotic world, the old rules, hierarchies and traditions have little or no authority. You have a choice. The trick is to always be responding, riding the wave, creating your own world, own reality (if you must). As with many things in your life, career, relationships, money. Happiness, largely, is a choice, but even more than that, happiness is a skill. First Choose happiness. The first step is easy (sort of), choose to be happy. If you make this your goal, same as losing weight, getting fit for a triathlon, taking a self-defence class, learning French or whatever, it will take priority in your life.
