My first skateboard was a plastic, lumo yellow (it was the 80s), penny board. The easiest way I figured how to turn without killing myself was to shift my weight on the board. No big kicks, no flips, just shifted my weight. I'm sure you did the same. It is still true for me today. If I want to change direction, I shift my weight, no big massive changes just a subtle shift. If it is the right shift, then the board, my life, will turn accordingly, if not...no harm done. How can you shift your weight into something new you've been wanting to try? Get skin in the game.
